May 18th, 2010

Please help this war!?

May 17th, 2010

I work at a Subway sandwiches restaurant.
Ok, so at my job, I discovered something kind of funny. One of my coworkers took a sticker and labeled the bain(The setup that we make subs on) with his name. This, he declared, made it his. The other coworkers said no and removed the sticker. AHA! but unknown to them, he had another one hidden underneath it. So it was still his he said. The other coworkers then declared war on him, and he made plans to "Assassinate" them. This started out pretty simple. Jalapeno juice or salt "poison" in their soda ect.
I got to hear about this when he next worked with me. He asked me if I would join his team and being the weird guy I am, I said No, that his enemies had supposedly paid me to be on their side. Millions of dollars were offered for me to turn traitor on the side that I had picked but at the end of the night, when I still refused to join his side, he warned me that I was pegged for assassination.
Here’s where the story starts getting a little more interesting. Keep in mind that I work at SUBWAY.
Last night, we got a customer in. Nothing weird here. It was some teenage kid. Again, nothing weird. He was in a COUSIN’S SUBS uniform. RED ALERT! Subway’s competitor wants a Subway cookie? Okaaaaay…
He says"I’ve just got a dollar, so I’ll just get one cookie." I thought Hmmm… OK, this is weird but who knows? (It once happened the other way around- some Subway employees went to Cousins in FULL UNIFORM one time. Traitors!)
So I gave him his cookie and he left. A few minutes later the door buzzer rang and I went to see who it was. HIM again! "OK, I lied, I found another dollar, that cookie was really good." Ahahahaha! This is great, Cousins apparently serves bad cookies… He asked that the cookie be toasted. Sometimes we get this, so I said sure. He then took his toasted cookie and left.
I noticed something strange. Shortly after he left, I saw him go around the back of our store to where the dumpsters are. I was confused but didn’t think too much of it- perhaps he was throwing away the wrapper or maybe toasted cookies weren’t his thing after all.
Well, several more minutes go by. My coworker(Not the one who previously talked about assassinating me.) was getting a customer. I was making meatballs in the back. I used up a box, so I went outside to throw it in the dumpster. I put the box in the dumpster when, BAM! something small light and squishy hit my back. "GOTCHA!" came the voice! Turns out, it was all a plot to assassinate me! I turned around. Sure enough my coworker had shot me with a Nerf gun. I was successfully eliminated. And the Cousin’s Subs guy was a friend of his who was buying cookies so he could know who was up front and who was in the back.
Now the person I had been working with was one of this guy’s original enemies from the whole bain incident. He then snuck inside and hid in our refrigerator.(Walk in) Again being me, I did not warn my coworker although we were on the same team. (I was dead, how could I?) I could barely keep from laughing while I was getting a customer when she went into the back to get some lettuce. I heard it. She walked to the back, opened the door and POOF! She was successfully assassinated too. "AH! Mike you jerk! I can’t believe you did that!" I then had to explain to my customer why I was grinning and barely able to keep from laughing. A "Surprise visit from another coworker" sufficed to explain myself. Fortunately customers were in a good mood last night and all enjoyed a jolly laugh around the bain glass.
So now I ask you. Please help me! I am in need of a creative way to assassinate my coworker! Any and all reasonable ideas are welcome! Salt poison is not working, he has a peculiar way of drinking- he tastes his drink with the tip of his tongue before he sucks it all up the straw. So how should I do this? Please! HELP THIS WAR!

1. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Japanese approach to product development?

May 11th, 2010

The Japanese methodology:

Japanese industrial combines are not what they appear to be. They do not develop all of their own product line, nor do they manufacture it. In reality, these huge businesses are more like “Trading companies”. That is, rather than design and manufactures their own goods, they actually coordinate a complex design and manufacturing process that involves thousands of smaller companies. The goods you buy with a famous maker’s name inscribed on the case are seldom the product of that company’s factory – and often not even the product of its own research. Some else designed it, someone else put it together, someone stuck it in a box with the famous maker’s name on it and then shipped it to its distributors.
Does this operation sound unnecessarily complex? Obviously, these huge corporations have their own factories and workers. So why don’t they employ their own resources to produce the goods they sell?
They do, of course – but only partially. For instance, it would make every little sense for an electronics giant like Matsushita to farm out the design, manufacture and assembly of a refrigerator or microwave oven. These products are ideally suited to mass production in the kind of large, highly automated factories that the giant companies can afford. Their factories produce hundreds of thousands of these units every year.
But what about products that companies must continually redesign to compete for public acceptance – like headphone stereos, small compact disc players, or personal computers? Redesigning means retooling a production line. It means sourcing new parts and lots of other things. For a typical product, a company might expect to sell 30,000 units in a few months, retool, sell another 50,000 u nits, redesign some basic components, retool again, see what the competition brings out, retool again and on and on, throughout the life cycle of the entire product line. Although some of the giant makers are now employing the newest flexible manufacturing system (FMS) to allow them more freedom in production, this retooling process is something many big companies want to eliminate.
Thus, they farm out much of this business to subcontractors – smaller companies they can depend on. These companies in turn, faced with redesigning and producing a product three or four times a year, will subcontract the design or manufacture of a dozen key components to still smaller companies.
How extensive is this sub contracting pyramid? Would you guess a few dozen companies? a few hundred? Think again. One electronics company I know has over 6,000 subcontractors in its industrial group, most of them tiny ships that exist just to fill a few little orders for the companies above them.
Welcome to the real world of Japanese manufacturing.

Fridge compressor click and buzz…?

May 10th, 2010

For last two days, my refrigerator’s compressor has been clicking and buzzing… I checked numerous sources on the web. It all leads to possible bad starter relay or compressor. I installed a new relay yesterday, but it is still doing the same… Freezer cannot cool down to 0F, it hovers around 40F. I used a kill-a-meter to measure the current and wattage drawing from the fridge. During the idle period with evaporator fan on, it is sub .1A, 35W… when compressor tries to kick on… it draws 20A, a high wattage.

I tried to find the amp rating for the compressor but cannot see any printing on the compressor itself. Is 20A normal? or is it too high which overload/overheat the compressor and trips the compressor every 2-3 minutes?

thanks
i checked the LRA rating… it is 19.5… does this mean when compressor is fully running it is suppose to run around 20A?
the freezer seems to be able to get down to 40F… does this mean that compressor is semi-working during those high humming/buzzing and clicking period? I checked the connector and relay… it is connected tightly…
can the defrost timer or other components fail to cause this? I feel that the compressor is stucked and is not able to start due to either electrical or mechanical issue.
I checked the capacitor… it measure 15 uF… which is what is rated on the cap…
Is there a universal starter kit?
I let the fridge idle/power off for about 4 hours during my part and misc shopping…
After I got the new starter relay in, the whole thing sounds the same…click… buzz… click… off….. 2 minutes later… click…buzz… click

I’m not an expert, but I still think that I was right one year ago!
At that time if the bank would had stop the NINA, and SISA loans. But went ahead with second homes and investments for people with excelent credit, it would had reboot the economy. Those of you who answer that the sky would had fall, and you would had lost a lot of money in your investments… Think… Haven’t you anyway? Reporters think that sub-prime lending was the no income no asset, or stated stated… it was much more wide. Even if you had an 800 FICO, as long as you where buying an investment property, it was considered sub-prime. Now that the economy in real bad for Realtors, loan officers, construction workers, title companies, etc, etc. it makes no sense. I think that since the Gov. is putting so much money in the line, they also should rewind the FICO, to the score you had 12 months ago, before the melt down. That way, people that where affected could get back an buy a new car, or get a refrigerator on credit, etc. Isn’t that what the economy need? (clarification) If you already had bad credit a year ago, you are part of the problem!
